about Assam

Famous for its incredible range of cultures, landscapes and most importantly for its tea plantations, Assam is a state in the north-east of India sharing its borders with Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh. Assam is known to have the best tea plantations in the country and the temples here too are worth a visit. Brahmaputra, one of the world’s greatest rivers, runs for 1800 miles from its source in the Tibetan Himalayas to its delta in the Bay of Bengal through this beautiful state. A land of high rainfall, Assam is endowed with lush greenery and the mighty river Brahmaputra. There are 765 thick lush green tea estates in Assam and more than 100,000 smaller gardens spread over 2.3 million hectares of land that together produce over 570 million kilos of tea annually. Besides tea, Assam silk is internationally well-known. The state has large and old petroleum resources. In fact, the first oil reserves of India were discovered here in the late 19th century.

The state of Assam is rich in culture and literature. Most of the cultural heritage dates back to the early 13th century when the Ahom Kings travelled from Thailand through northern Myanmar to this region. You are sure to take back a piece of the culture that you will witness in this place. The state is famed for its rich biodiversity. It’s most famous attraction is the Kaziranga National Park, home to the rare Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros. With five national parks, two of which are designated World Natural Heritage Sites by UNESCO, and several wildlife and bird sanctuaries, Assam is an exalted land for wildlife buffs. Elephant-back rides are conducted very early in the morning and during the day you can ride out into the jungle in jeeps. The rich landscape of Assam with verdant hills and valleys divided by the magnificent Brahmaputra along with the tributaries is a home to several endangered species of animals and birds.
